Information of Puerto Rico


Location- Caribbean Island between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico lies at 18 degrees 15 minutes north latitude and 66 degrees 30 minutes west longitude.
Size- Landmass of 3,412 square miles (8,870 sq km). Highest point: Cerro Punta at 4,419 feet (1,339 m).
Time Zone- Eastern Standard Time. Although Puerto Rico does not follow Daylight time savings.
Capital- San Juan
Money- The US Dollar. Money exchange is available in large airports and shopping. Most stores and business take major credit cards.
Electricity- Same as the United States; 110 Volts/60 Hertz with US style plugs.
Measurements- Speed limits are in Kilometers. Dive Operators generally use feet/meters and psi/bars when communication dive data.
Entry Requirements- US citizens will not need a passport, but will need some type of photo identification such as a photo ID or a driver’s license. Puerto Rico is a territory of The United States, with a Commonwealth Status.
Transportation- Taxi and buses are common. Most major car rentals companies in the United States are represented as well as local companies. The major highways are very modem, many have tolls so be sure and bring change.
Official Languages- Spanish and English
Health- In general, health issues are not a major concern.
Getting There- Puerto Rico is a major hub for most of the Caribbean with many airlines represented. Many cruise lines include the island on their Itinerary.
Dress- Casual lightweight clothes are the norm with some upscale restaurant more formal wear. Swimwear only at beaches and cover-ups required elsewhere.
Tipping- Menu restaurants and hotels add a service charge in lieu of tipping.
Major Airports- International Airport Luis Muñoz Marin in San Juan, Mercedita in Ponce and Rafael Hernandez in Aguadilla.
